Welcome to The Scale Generator - Dedicated to the memory of Chris Squire. There is much more information about scales than a single page can deliver. However, this device will enable you to generate and analyze hundreds of scales. The more you already know about scales, chord structure and harmony will help you to make better use the information the Scale Generator provides. The more you know, the more you will learn. Most of the music we hear in Western Culture is derived from a few 7 note sequences selected from the 12 note chromatic scale. The term 'Parent Scale' has come into use to describe these unique patterns. The Scale Generator will build a chromatic scale from the note you choose and then sift out the various available Parent Scales. Click one of the notes from the row above to generate a chromatic scale, then choose a Parent Scale button to display the notes and related modes within that Parent Scale. The structure and available chords will be shown as well. The 'Parallel' button displays all of the modes, in parallel, built from the note you selected. The 'More Scales' button will show you additional scales, (Whole Tone, Symmetric Diminished, blues, etc.) also built from your note. The 'Scale Structure' button displays a list that shows the structure of all the Parent Scales and their modes. Be alert for the few unavoidable enharmonic spellings (i.e. Ab VS G#) in some of the modes of the Minor scales.
